DIY Home Wiring
Every "DIYer" should familiarize themselves with some important guidelines regarding safety, not only on DIY home wiring,
but on any else DIY project. Be sure what you are doing is the best important thing to think about. Before undertaking
an electrical repair or wiring project, make sure you have the correct tools and supplies ready. All cables are marked
with a series of letters followed by a number, a dash and another number. The letters indicate the type of insulation
(cord, wire and insulation). The first number indicates the resistance of the wires in the cable, and the number
following the dash indicates the number of individual conductors in the cable.

All electrical work requires that you pull a permit with your local electrical authority. Most jurisdictions allow
a homeowner to work on his/her own home's electrical system. Some areas only allow work on branch circuits and
not main service panel installation. Always shut off the breaker (or pull the fuse, in the case of an older house)
that feeds the circuit you are about to work on, also verify that that the circuit is dead before working on it
(Use a voltage tester or a lamp or radio).
The two or three large wires entering a panel from the outside remain live, even if you have shut off the switch or
breakers. Never touch service wires, and don't work near them with a metal ladder. If you think there is a
problem with these wires, play it safe and contact the power company. Electrical Online

Wires can be either solid of stranded. Most DIY home wiring you do will be with solid wire. This is easier to work with
and takes less time to install. Wire is grouped by gauge number, running from 0000 to No. 40. The smaller the number,
the thicker the wire. For home use, the most common gauges are between 10 and 20.
Cable refers to two or more wires or conductors grouped together in a jacket. A cable
has a hot line to carry the current and a neutral line to complete the loop. They often have a third wire as that
acts as a grounding wire. Do It Yourself
Electricity always seeks the quickest path back to its source or to the earth. The process of grounding adds protection
against electrical shock by ensuring that you or any other individual does not become a path through which electricity
moves. Proper grounding provides a safe path for electricity to safely move from a defective outlet, fixture, appliance
or tool back into the earth, which happens to be a very good electrical conductor.
